Wireless Gateway devices can be configured to connect [[wikipedia:Code division multiple access|CDMA]] or [[wikipedia:GSM|GSM]] data networks to [[wikipedia:Ethernet|Ethernet]] or [[wikipedia:Wi-Fi|Wi-Fi]] for use on the boat. For connecting greater distances from the shore, amplifiers and in some cases directional antennas will help. However, directional antennas require alignment. A cellular bidirectional amplifier with a hi gain omni antenna can be less trouble.
